Due to advances in technology and innovation, more and more baby equipment and “containers” have become available over the last several years. What is considered a “container”? Examples include: Car seats, bouncy seats, activity seats, walkers, exersaucers, swings, and rockers. These “containers” that are on the market can be incredibly efficient at soothing and entertaining a baby. However, it is important to remember that babies fuss for a reason. It is how they communicate with their caretakers. Babies that move from container to container often miss out on experiences with their caretakers and movements during play that are essential for their development.
When babies spend too much time in containers there is more rounding of their spine and it limits their ability to explore active movement in different directions. Tummy time provides a baby the opportunity to gain head control, experience weight bearing through their arms, work on motor planning, coordination and develop strength in their trunk. Other benefits include improved visual coordination, aided digestion, promotion of natural head shape, and development of arches in the hand that support eventual skills, such as handwriting. While some of this equipment is necessary to keep your baby safe, it is important to limit the use of these “containers” and provide your baby with multiple opportunities to play, explore, learn and have fun on their tummy!
